This project was initiated as part of the first MAU Workshop at UNITEC in 2018. The initial elective course focused on the rehabilitation and refurbishment of ruins from the 2009 tsunami which affected Tonga, American Samoa and Samoa. This resulted in two proposals, which were presented to the Poutasi Development Trust, Poutasi Women’s Committee, and elders of the village, during MAU Studio’s architecture conference LE VA Talanoa. The proposals received a warm reception, however brought forward further feedback and suggestions which resulted in a new brief better addressing the needs of the village.

The new brief introduced facilities required by Poutasi Women’s Committee to successfully fulfill their day-to-day activities. These facilities include an information centre, an organic eatery, a memorial, art centre, office spaces, and learning centre. It is intended that the aforementioned spaces will provide education and income through agriculture, arts, and tourism opportunities for women of the Poutasi village.

This project will be on-going, and will be developed further as a part of MAU workshop in 2019. To view the output of the first MAU Workshop, please click the link below.
